Silver Session IV
12th Sep, 2006 at 9:39am

Hello to all of you out there in Prog Land Cool

I am very pleased to announce the broadcast of my fourth session here at Stellar Attraction which will begin this coming Friday at 9pm GMT and will also be replayed throughout the course of the following week. Grin

Here is the full schedule

Friday 15th Sep @ 9:00pm (GMT)

Sunday 17th Sep @ 6:00pm (GMT)

Monday 18th Sep @ 3:00pm (GMT)

Wednesday 20th Sep @ 2:00am (GMT)

Thursday 21st Sep @ 11:00am (GMT)

Over the course of the session you will be able to hear the entire third album by Gazpacho, an excellent 'new' band from Norway. The album is entitled 'Firebird' and if you like what you hear it is available (along with their first two releases) here: http://www.marillion.com/racket/albums/gazpacho.htm

Also in there somewhere is a 1974 concert by Yes from their Topographic Oceans tour. Although this is an audience recording the quality is still very good.

As I'm typing this I am now struggling to remember what else is included  as it was a little while ago when it was compiled so it's gonna be a surprise for me as well!

Oh yes, just remembered, there is a Genesis show from 1977, also a good audience recording.

Well I hope you all enjoy the session and thanks once again to the Progmaster for allowing me to indulge myself again.

Cheers Smiley

Apart from it clocking-in at a little over 12 HOURS, it's simply an excellent choice of tracks.

'Drowse' is dedicated to Rob Boardman, a friend from a Marillion forum, who passed away earlier this year. It was one of his favourite tracks and was played at his funeral.

Not at all. It is taken from the album 'A Day at the Races' from 1976.It's a Roger Taylor (drummer) composition and sung by Roger as well. Roger sang nearly all his own songs. Radio Ga Ga being one of the few exceptions.

Apart from what has already been mentioned in my opening post, expect to hear over the next 12  hours songs from Marillion (no surprise there then), Gong, Kate Bush, Porcupine Tree, Mew, Tool, King Crimson and Peter Gabriel to name but a few

I think the Fifth of Firth fully tested the range of Phil's voice.

Was watching a DVD of Hackett last night from the Bottom Line NYC circa 1982 and he was then and still is quite the expressive guitarist.

..hmm..that I'd like to see! The RA&B film I remember seeing on television in the states - it was a somewhat cheesy robbery caper with the four lads dressed in overcoats & masks... Wink

Is this Chester on drums?  (not bruford)

Couple of notes regarding this show

a: I wrongly mentioned earlier that this is an audience recording when it is in fact sourced from the soundboard with the exception of Carpet Crawlers which was audience recorded

b: Apparantly, this is the second to last full show Steve Hackett did with the band

Great album indeed. I know side one has all the hits (and classic tracks they are too) but side two is where she really gets creative and goes out on a limb.

The Topographic Oceans Tour of 1973/74 took in over 70 shows. However only about half of these actually featured the whole of the then 'new' album. Also the set list did change slightly in so much as initiallty they played Heart of the Sunrise instead of And You And I, before deciding to play the whole of the Close To The Edge album, dropping HOFTS, only to reintroduce it again once The Remembering  was dropped and also I think playing Starship Trooper (I could be wrong about that one). Of course with so few shows actually featuring all of TFTO good quality recordings are even more rare. This one is a particular gem.

For those of you who have not been able to catch this live performance (and the Genesis one earlier) I'm sure that both may at some time find their way onto the regular playlist if requested enough.

Cheers
David

[quote author=silver link=1158050395/45#51 date=1158388365]The Topographic Oceans Tour of 1973/74 took in over 70 shows. Yes, due to some fan "indifference", they cut back two of the four sides during the tour... perhaps right after Detroit. It is documented in one of the Yes books that are out there.  So having the Remembering is truly special! Thanks for sharing!

Great set yesterday (friday), i particularly enjoyed hearing the genesis live in switzerland.  I occured to me, now this may or may not be true but, the genesis sound of the late 70's really paved the way for what music was going to sound like in the eighties, right?  Either that or maybe Genesis was ahead of its time?  The spot the pigeon keyboard solo was nice to hear again.. that's a 45' my collection somehow lost.  I lost all my 45's, omg, where are my 45's?  Chester Thompson on drums is groovy too.  I thought Mike Rutherford really shined on this occasion- playing at times with Chester Thompson hinting an almost swinging type feel.  Viva les Drums!  Even being familiar with the second's out recordings, I was really suprised by the vocals.  Always in a strong accurate and gutsy tone, Phil Collins played what I would say are some not so easy parts from interpretating the more early material off of SEbtP.  It was a great show complete with its share of moments and good humour, i'm sure all listeners will agree.  Hearing some Queen too was great fun.  Thanks for the great programming SA Smiley

I forgot that it was just Phil as the robber & Mike R. as the victim. You can see Hackett as one of the cops & I assume Tony is there too, but its not too clear.  Nice footage of Tony on the keys (would have liked to see Steve during his solo though) Cool

Ok guys and gals, this is the last broadcast of the session Cry and I just wanted to say thanks for all the positive comments I have received both here on the forum and private messages.

It's always a little nerve racking when putting these sessions together; yes I do it for myself but I also hope that others will enjoy it. Not only hearing some familiar music but maybe also something new as well.

Thanks again
David

The best session by Silver so far IMO - an excellent selection of tracks throughout. I can't be alone in this opinion - the main server hit full capacity on more occasions than I can remember !! Shocked

Cheers Silver - here's looking to Silver Session V Cool

In the meantime, from one David to another (much cooler and Progged-out) David ...
