Next up is Paul's song Too Many People from his album Ram - this song contains lines that John Lennon took as an insult, particularly 'you took your lucky break and broke it in two'. His response was the far more obvious, scathing 'How Do You Sleep?', which very specifically criticises Paul. George and Ringo were also present at some of the sessions for the song, during which even crueller lyrics were suggested than the ones ending up in the song. It is reported that Ringo often felt uncomfortable with some of the nastier lines suggested by John, George, Yoko and Allen Klein (the Beatles' manager towards the end of their time together). This particular version is a demo, in which you can hear John say 'how do you sleep, brother?', which would not make it into the final version.

Paul's reply to this was the rather sad 'Dear Friend' from his album 'Wild Life', which put an end to their public bickering through song.

The next track, John Lennon's 'Bless You', is from 1974, a time when the initial unpleasantness of the band's breakup was beginning to pass, and is a mellow song which was written during Lennon's separation from Yoko Ono.

We jump forward with the next track, which is one of Paul's from early 1980. Coming Up originally featured on the album McCartney II. Lennon was apparently impressed by this song, and has mentioned that it was one of the reasons that he went back into the studio and started making music again, a short time before his death. This version is a live one from last year's iTunes Festival.

One of the songs John wrote during this period is our next track, 'Nobody Told Me', which was released posthumously on his 'Milk and Honey' album in 1984.

Relations between Lennon and McCartney had, to the latter's relief, improved greatly by the time Lennon died in December 1980, when they spoke often on the phone. Paul wrote our next track, and the last one in this little section - Here Today, as a tribute to his friend and songwriting partner.

It's back to The Beatles now, and the first track in this last section is Cry Baby Cry, originally on the Beatles' White Album. This version is a lovely demo of the song from the Beatles Anthology.

Next up is another demo track, this time of the song 'And Your Bird Can Sing', originally on the album Revolver. This botched take features the group collapsing into giggles shortly after the song begins for an unknown reason - though it is known in some circles as 'the baked take'. Wink

Next is another snippet of behind the scenes chatter, this time from the recording sessions for George Harrison's song Think For Yourself, featured on the album Rubber Soul and released in 1965. John and Paul muck about quite a lot during this session, and this little clip is a fine example of the fun the group often had in the studio. Following this is the song itself in its completed version.

Crank up your speakers for the last two tracks in the session - the first is the Beatles' 'I've Got A Feeling' from the album Let It Be (this particular version is from Let It Be ... Naked, the 2003 'remastering' of the album). This brilliant song was, like Baby You're A Rich Man from the beginning of the session, put together from two separate Lennon and McCartney songs - McCartney's incomplete 'I've Got A Feeling' and Lennon's incomplete 'Everybody Had A Hard Year'. As was often the case with Lennon/McCartney, the finished song was greater than the sum of its parts, the two separate pieces fitting together perfectly despite being very different.

Our last track is Paul McCartney and Wings' 'Rockestra Theme', which fetaures a huge number of guest musicians, including Denny Laine, Laurence Juber, David Gilmour, Hank Marvin, Pete Townshend, Steve Holly, John Bonham, Kenney Jones, Paul McCartney, John Paul Jones, Ronnie Lane, Bruce Thomas, Gary Brooker, Linda McCartney, Tony Ashton, Speedy Acquaye, Tony Carr, Ray Cooper, Morris Pert, Howie Casey, Tony Dorsey, Steve Howard and Thaddeus Richard. Keith Moon was to have performed on the track but had died shortly before it was recorded.

'Rockestra Theme' won the 1980 Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

Well, that's all for tonight, folks! I hope you enjoyed the tracks, and hopefully see you again in the future for Beatles Session 3.

Cool
