I have chosen the album
Imaginos
by
Blue Oyster Cult
for this session purely on the basis that it's one of my favourites
Released back in 1988, Imaginos came as a surprise to most people including myself as BoC recovered themselves a bit from a couple of mediocre album releases in the mid eighties. Touted as a concept album, but described more as a Random Access Myth by BoC themselves, Imaginos is big in terms of sound, scope and imagination.
The "concept" or "myth" deals with a the character, Imaginos, who appears through time at various points in 19th century history as an agent of influence, bending situations to his own will. (whatever all that means)
Unfortunately the story does not follow very easily and is described in much more detail in the album notes, which are far too long and whacked out to type here. I have to also mention here that this album is not in print anymore and is pretty rare, so if you have a copy then hold onto it!!
Everything about this ablum is on the large side. From the production to the guitar orchestra of which, Marc Biedermann, Aldo Nova and Joe Satriani are present, to the longest ever song title, The Siege and Investiture of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle at Weisseria...... (I kid you not!)
Also on the album is a reworking of the BoC classic, Astronomy, which was originally from the album Secret Treaties (1974), another fav of mine.
So, as always, lock yourselves in a warm dark room, get the headphones on and turn up the volume...mood enhancing substances (legal) are optional of course :
