Haven't heard much of GG until coming here, but, a few tunes do sound quite similar to Black Sabbath.--All way cool!! Marillion sounds a bit like PG singing too on some tunes!! Not really scary, but, GOOD!!

Glad that 'Gentle Giant' has received such a warm reception. They really are an excellent group - very unique style. Plenty more of them to come ... Grin

The comparison between 'Marillion' and 'Genesis' has been made before. The track 'Grendel' which is currently on the playlist springs to mind. Anyway, I'll leave it to our 'Marillion' guru 'Silver' to comment on this further ... Grin

I'm certainly not going to deny that early Marillion had a Genesis influence, although Grendel is the only Marillion song that blatently sounds like them. Fortunately the band were given time to develop their own sound and dare I say it, progress. Which thay continue to do to this day. Grin

Just for the record, seeing as this is a Gentle Giant thread and not a Marillion one. Gentle Giant are not my cup of tea at all. Can't win 'em all I suppose.

Try 'The Power and the Glory' or 'Playing the fool (LIVE)'. Absolutely mindblowing stuff! These guys play around fifty thousand instruments each, HONEST!!!!

Christ knows how big their tourbus must've been. Grin

Incidentally, Derek Shulman as some of you may know, went on to work for a major US record label and was responsible for signing some of the heaviest acts out there.

So just goes to show there was metal in the guy all that time ago eh? Wink

You're telling the truth CC! I saw the Giant in 1977 at the Shrine Auditorium, LA. This would have been supporting the Playing the Fool Live album.
At one point in the concert all five players, even drummer, were playing Guitar, then all were playing Recorders, then all percussion, then all acapella. Most incredible night of my life! Made me a fan for life! (I think shortly after that concert I bought an alto recorder)
The opener was Renaissance (song for all seasons tour), and they were quite amazing too! (have any of their stuff Dee?)

(think-Maddy Prior or Sandy Denny) I remember her and the bass player as being predominant/ Very symphonic stuff-great keyboard work. Mother Russia from Turn of the Cards is probably my favourite.
