Iron Maiden perhaps ?

How about some good ol' Iron Maiden ?

While they may not be thought of as classically "prog" they have undoubtedly been the leading light of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM for short) and continue to be so right up to the present day.

I was probably initially put off them by the image of be-studded leather jacketed fans, but their music is a great listen and full of proggy bits !!

How about "Rainmaker" or "Paschendale" both from the album Dance of Death ?

It's nice to hear great musicianship along with thoughtful lyrics.

I found both of these on YouTube :

Iron Maiden covered Nektar's "King of Twilight" (from A TAB IN THE OCEAN) on one of their studio albums. I've heard it's good, and would like to hear it sometime.

Meanwhile, I must agree, you gotta love that NWOBHM!!!
