Yes Tour 2008
25th May, 2008 at 5:44pm

It's NEVER too early to have an "endless" dream set list. This being the 40th year tour, why not touch on every album in order to get the true PROGRESSION of these progressive kings? I will be at the July 18 show in Chicago. First row, half way between Jon and Chris, wearing my Stellar Attraction baseball shirt. Send me a message if you are attending.

The list is a stretch, but it is always good to have goals in your life!  LOL

Looking Around
Astral Traveller
Perpetual Change
Heart of the Sunrise
And You and I
Live Tales Medley -- like what Howe did, but for 20 minutes and with much better vocals Cheesy
Sound Chaser
Awaken
INTERMISSION
Release, Release
Machine Messiah
Changes
I'm Running
Shock to the System
Endless Dream
Be the One
Open Your Eyes
New Languages

Give Love Each Day

encore

Close to the Edge
(what a way to finish a show!

Granted, it would be a 3-hour show. But isn't that what Endless Dreams are all about?

Anyway, just my wishful thinking.

Jeff from Illinois

Wow !!

Now that is a dream set-list there, Jeff. I like the inclusions of 'Looking Around' and 'Astral Traveller' - so many tracks from the first two albums I'd love to hear them play ...

An 'Acoustic 'Tales Medley' would be wonderful too. I remember when talking to Alan White at the Umbrello Record's launch that he'd love to play 'The Remembering' live. That and 'Endless Dream'.

Here's still keeping my eyes peeled for the Europe / UK leg !! Cool

Superb list Jeff!

I wish *Yes* would play some more different songs to.Especially something from TAAW and *Endless Dream* from *Talk*.

Also I am still wondering when the dates are for when they come to Europe.

Last I heard, Europe was 2009 and South America in 2010.

Selfishly, I do hope they hit the States again in either of those years as well (Note: I said "as well", not "instead of"!). Every show that we see now could be the last one.   Cry

But this will be #49 for me! Shocked

Surely, they will do tunes from Drama.. after all, it's not we have ever heard them with Jon anyway and the new guy sounds more like Jon than Trevor Horn. So we can close our eyes and pretend. Smiley

You can hear him here:  http://www.ctte.net/en/

And yes, it is "THE" Jeff...  the antichrist of Eno/TD/The Orb; I guess I stopped dropping acid 30 years too early.  LOL

Here is the official press release, as posted on Yesworld.com

In the Present Tour
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STEVE HOWE, CHRIS SQUIRE AND ALAN WHITE OF GROUNDBREAKING ROCK GROUP YES UNITE FOR “IN THE PRESENT” U.S. TOUR

Members will be joined by Oliver Wakeman on keyboards and vocalist Benoit David to perform the group’s classic repertoire in live spectacular

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 10, 2008—Albums like Fragile, Close to the Edge Tales from Topographic Oceans and 90125 and singles such as “Roundabout,” “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and “I’ve Seen All Good People” are just some of the enduring classics that have made YES one of the most influential and groundbreaking groups in rock & roll. Now, the classic YES line-up of guitarist Steve Howe, bassist Chris Squire and drummer Alan White will launch the "In The Present" tour starting November 4th in Hamilton, Ontario, marking yet another chapter in the art-rockers’ amazing, 40-year career of legendary live performances. The three will be joined by keyboardist Oliver Wakeman, the son of YES’ Rick Wakeman, and vocalist Benoit David, a Montreal, Quebec, native and vocalist in several YES tribute groups, who was discovered by the band on the Internet.

With a remarkable 40-year career that has time and again redefined the boundaries of rock, YES was formed in 1968 by Chris Squire and Jon Anderson, who shared a mutual interest in vocal harmonies and classical music. With drummer Bill Bruford, guitarist Peter Banks and keyboardist Tony Kaye, they became YES, earning a residency at the famed London venue The Marquee Club, where they played with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd, releasing their self-titled debut album in July 1969.

Guitarist Steve Howe, who went on to play in the popular prog-rock groups Asia and GTR and continues releasing acclaimed solo albums and touring, brought an experimental cutting edge to YES for their 1970’s The Yes Album, their first number one album in the UK. Drummer Alan White, who had been hand-picked to play on John Lennon’s Imagine and George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, came aboard in 1972. YES then went on to conquer America and played at some of the largest paid attendance concerts of all time including the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia in 1976 to a crowd of over 130,000 people.

YES postponed plans for a 40th anniversary Close to the Edge and Back tour in June, when vocalist Jon Anderson suffered a severe asthma attack and was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure. Commented Squire: "This isn't an attempt to replace Jon Anderson, because as we all know, that would be impossible. With Benoit, we are bringing in a talented singer so that we can go out and honor the music of YES for the fans who have waited for the past four years to see us perform."

A dominant force in rock music for more than four decades, YES has created some of rock’s most enduring and compelling hits, selling more than 30 million albums worldwide. The group has defined music history with their dynamic instrumental contrasts and abstract lyrics. Their symphonic use of sound and innovative musical styles continues to make them the most successful progressive rock band in history and their amazing career continues to defy many of their rock counterparts.

How fitting that I am able to post the first review and set list as I started this thread!    Cool

That being said, here is a a review from last night's opening show. I was not quite sure where the author was heading based on how the article started, but LOVED the finish. I highlighted my favorite part.... Below that is the setlist. for those who do not want the spoilers, please turn away!

Jeff

Graham Rockingham
The Hamilton Spectator

This one had problems for me from the outset.

First there were the personal ones. I mean, was Yes really that impressive back in 1971? Or was I just an impressionable kid?

Back then we were looking for something different. The Beatles were long gone and the Haight-Ashbury hippies were turning back to their musical roots.

We wanted something new, our own, something bigger, that would turn rock into an art form, something of which we could be proud.

Yes filled the bill. The music was grand in scope. The lyrics were indecipherable. (Were those really "marmots coming out of the sky" in Roundabout?). It may not have been better, but it was certainly different from Crosby, Stills And Nash. But maybe, just maybe, Yes was overblown pretentious rubbish?

There was also the baggage that Yes brought themselves. We had Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White were more than old. They had wanted this year to be Yes's 40th anniversary tour, but vocalist Jon Anderson's health wasn't up to it. They decided, over his protestations, to carry on with it anyway.

They did the unthinkable and hired an unknown Montreal tribute artist, Benoit David, to take his place. Anderson squawked. They wrote him off, nonetheless, and did it without him. Legendary keyboard player Rick Wakeman wasn't up to it, either. So they picked up his son, Oliver. Oh, the humanity!

Last night, however, Squire, Howe and White proved this had nothing to do with betrayal, pretention, sentimentality or even money. These guys had to perform the music they were born to play. There was no plus in waiting for Anderson to heal. The music was too good and so were they.

Why not take up a guy like David who last night proved he could sing the contralto vocals as well as Anderson could in his prime? Why not pick up a kid who looked exactly like his dad? He has the music in his blood.

Howe and Squire are amazing musicians, as good, if not better , than we thought back in 1971. They're simply one of the greatest guitar-bass teams in the history of rock 'n' roll. They proved it time and again last night.
Grin
They opened with Siberian Khatru, for Pete's sake, a showcase for Howe's needlepoint guitar and Squire's precision thunder on bass.

They dared to turn it into I've Seen All Good People, deftly pulling off its ragtime break, before heading into Heart Of The Sunrise. By the time they had finished off the opening set with the Close To The Edge suite, the audience was simply dumbfounded. The vocal harmonies were fantastic. There was a White drum solo that made us understand why he was John Lennon's favourite.

Back in 1971, we had nothing to be ashamed of. Last night, Yes stood the test of time.

SET LIST:

Firebird Suite
Siberian Khatru
I've Seen All Good People
Heart Of The Sunrise
Tempus Fugit
Onward
Astral Traveller
Close To The Edge
Parallels
And You And I
Mood For A Day/Clap
Owner Of A Lonely Heart
Long Distance Runaround/The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus)
Aliens (Are Only Us From The Future)
Machine Messiah
Soon
South Side Of The Sky
Roundabout

Chicago, 4 weeks from today!

Just received this reply from the Ontario review about his column...

The harmonies between David, Howe and Squire were remarkable. And You And I was early in the second set. Thanks for reading. Cheers, Graham

I'm only saying that Darran put a feature in the forum for us to use. With the media button, no need to go out of the forum, the video is in the forum. And this isn't restricted to the "Media Center" thread.  See here :http://www.stellar-attraction.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?virboard=news;num=122323...

To pay respect to the hard work Darran went through to give us this option, we should use it. And I think its nicer than text URLs. Its true that its the exact same thing...

That said, I only wanted to help you. If you don't like the media button, that's ok. I don't uderstand why, but it's still at your discretion.

For those of you wondering what
Tempus Fugit
might sound like with Jon rather than Trevor Horn......

Good one. But I was careful to say "what Jon might sound like", not "what Jon sounds like".

We all know there is only one Jon. Just happy Chris found a vocalist for the 2008 Chris Squire Tour. Wink

Still no video posting of the Aliens tune. I will keep checking or will have to hear it for a first time on 12/3 in Chicago.

Here is a pretty cool interview with Chris after the second show. It is posted on his site.

I saw on Henry Potts' site that they are talking about touring Europe on 2009. Not sure what cities other than London. Steve has some Asia commitments in spring, but they are working around those.
Hey, maybe Jon will be recovered by then!

Here is a nice review from the 11/24 Albany show......

Yes @ Times Union Center, 11/23/08
November 24, 2008 at 10:52 am

As good as the real deal? Yes

By Michael Eck

Special to the Times Union

ALBANY — Is it Yes? Is it In The Present? Is it In The Present featuring members of Yes?

The marketing of the current, well, let’s just call it Yes tour has been a bit confusing.

Perhaps that’s the reason fewer than 2,000 fans turned out for the classic British progressive rock band’s performance at the Times Union Center on Sunday.

Those that did, however, were treated to a brilliant show that touched on almost all of the important phases of the band’s 40 year career.

Some longtime fans were surely doubtful that without under-the-weather vocalist Jon Anderson in tow the group would sound considerably different.

Pshaw! Vocalist Benoit David – snagged from a Canadian Yes tribute band – effortlessly recreated Anderson’s trademark sound. And he did so with a confidence that suggested he was born for the job.

Rick Wakeman’s son Oliver similarly handled dad’s old gig behind the keyboards, ricocheting snaky lines back and forth with guitarist Steve Howe.

With Anderson at home convalescing, this Yes was free to tackle material from 1980’s “Drama,” the only group album not to feature the founding singer.

“Tempus Fugit” and “Machine Messiah” were actually among the night’s highlights, with the former suggesting that “Drama” may have influenced Rush as that band moved from its own progressive suites into=2 0a punchier, poppier sound.

1970’s “Astral Traveler,” which was recorded even before Howe had joined the band, also reflected elements of other prog pioneers, with a distinctly fractured King Crimson-like opening chord sequence releasing into a Focus-like middle section, which highlighted Wakeman’s keyboards.

Drummer Alan White was featured on a brief and terrific drum solo, too.

Bassist Chris Squire pointed out that many of the evening’s selections, like “Traveler” and “Messiah” were coming out of mothballs for the first time in many years.

“Parallels,” from 1977’s “Going For The One,” for example, is being given its first airing in 30 years on the tour, and David, 42, sang “Onward,” from 1978’s “Tormato (CQ),” which he explained was his own request to the band.

Howe played some of his best – though gentlest – guitar on the latter, leading the tune in with a muted, tick-tocking ballad figure.

All of 1972’s perennial “Close to the Edge” was show-cased, including the crowd-pleasing title track, a swirling 20-minute excursion into harmony vocals, hippie wisdom and instrumental machismo.

“And You and I” and the trippy opener “Siberian Khatru” also came from “Edge,” with “I’ve Seen All Good People” and a sterling rip through “Starship Trooper” being culled from 1971’s “The Yes Album.”

Yes encored with a one-two punch of the band’s best known songs, the 1983 mega-hit “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and the FM radio staple, “Roundabout.”

And David sang them both like he owned them.

Here is all of Siberian from Columbus (Nov. 12th).  Whatever your feeling is on Benoit versus Jon, it is safe to say that Chris and Steve would not be touring without him.  So I for one am THANKFUL for that!

It's all about the music. And if you want proof of this, check this band out from the 7:44 mark on.. Go ahead, crank it loud. Let it rip!

Here's more...

Soon from Cleveland 11/25/08
(Chris' bass is always so overlooked during this -- for obvious reasons. Absolutely the softest, most precious bass passage you can imagine).

Astral Traveller from Cleveland 11/25/2008

All Good People from Cleveland 11/25/2008

And, fittingly, I will close with Roundabout, also from Cleveland 11/25/2008
