The time-zone confusion was due to the website server currently being located in the States. It is going to be migrated to a datacentre in the UK soon.

Anyway, it has now been adjusted.

Enjoy. Cool

A little sarcasm JaneEyre, we had 48 cm of snow this week end. For all you english system 48 cm is 18.9 inches.

Nice, nice spring. We almost beaten the snow fall record for Ottawa this year. Almost.... I think its around 425 cm (167.3 inches) of snow the record.

Passer du coq à l’âne  : Changer brusquement de sujet dans une conversation de façon confuse.

To abruptly change subject in a conversation in a confused way    Is there any English equivalent?

And Yes Ouais is Oui and I think its used in Belgium like in Quebec.

I do not wish to "couper les cheveux en quatre" Maxime but in English a Cockerel and a Rooster is the same thing!

A Rooster is normally a young Cockerel.

But a Poule in English is called a "Hen".

I think that the problem with this translation is because of the word "Ass" this can also means "Donkey" in English.

I did'nt know that a coquerel was a young Rooster...   Sorry!

Ok, i'll give you something to chew on guys.

"J'va me coucher moins niaiseux a soir"

In Quebec, we do a lot of word contraction to make sentences shorter (orally). I've written it like I would of said it.

Good luck for the translation.

For help just ask!

Sounds like it could be (despite my poor French) ...

Voulez vous coucher avec moi se soir !! - like the line from that well known song - that I can't remember !!

But probably I'm completely wrong !!

I've no idea what "niaiseux" means

In Quebec we use "niaiseux" for the meaning "Stupid" , "Dumb" and even "Silly".
So naive is not bad. Nice one huntr_22. Nice try oldrocker Tongue
And we use "a soir" toi say "ce soir" Wink (another little contraction)

In English : I'm going to bed less stupid tonight.

I'm enjoying this. I learned French by memorising lots of vocabulary and grammar, without having to speak it much - and consequently I am reluctant to engage in conversation Embarrassed This forum is a non-threatening way to improve. And going to bed less stupid is a great ambition   Smiley

Crikey !! This thread has gone adrift somewhat ... interesting as it is, though.

I do know that a 'Poule' (English = 'Hen') is colloquial in French for a younger, 'kept', mistress. Wink

Your right D!  Poule or Poulette   Grin

Its more "European" expression somewhat, but today, with American movies translated in France, we use "slangs" from France, like Poule. But I'm not 100% certain that it does come from France, but I know that France French translated movies does have an impact on our french.

Yup, I think this thread has gone through a worm hole !!!

Anyway I think this is one of my Dad's "urban myth" expressions - ie not true !!

"La derriere cuisine" ... obviously literally "the back kitchen"

But ... does it have another meaning ?

Over to our French & Canadian French speaking forumites !!!

Further to that - birds are used as friendly greetings in various parts of the UK - generally to a female.

Eg in Lincolnshire you'd hear "Are you alright
duck
?"
In Glasgow " Yoos ok
hen
?"

Any others ?   Grin Grin

I'm not familiar with this expression Oldrocker, I'll take a look on the net. If it does exist, never heard it...
Those english "duck" expressions made me think of Bugs Bunny  :p

What's up Duck !! - nice one !!  Grin

Supposedly it means "cooking the books"

Meaning alteration of accounts to make the figures add up !!

I reckon it's not a genuine expression ! - a urban myth it is then !! as you've not heard of it & I cannot find anything about it on the net.

Aw well   Undecided
