hi,
btw can someone help me identify that whirly keyboard sound you can hear disctinctly on Atom Heart Mother and also on some Tangerine Dream recordings?  I may be wayoff here, but do you guys know what i'm referring to?  It sounds like a patented recording trick pulloff but if the Dream has it in one of their songs it must be a type of setup or treatment/keyboard choice.

I know exactly waht you're reffering to. Its some filter on the organ or mellotron - sounds like the same effect they used to distort the vocal "silence in the studio!" - might be a ring modulator or something. Here are some other interesting facts I found though...

Dee;

Tarkus - ELP.

Truly a perfect album side A.

Why are ELP and Yes and Genesis, not in the RnR Hall of Fame?

Hmm.. is that the genetically modified stuff?  I'm not sure what kind of corn we get in Calif. but it readily available most of the year - Bbq'd in the husk - sweet!

Btw - what Tang Dream tune do you remember that effect from - their sites might have more tecky info on the how it was done.  The reason I thought Ring Modulation is because around that time (early 70's) it was very popular to modify the Electric Piano (pre-synth experimentation)
Check out Big Swifty by Frank Zappa (waka jawaka 1972) & these links:

I'm not sure about the song name, it just struck me when i heard it.

You're right, a lot of corn crops contain gmos.  I'm not sure about the one I bought.  I know it was local, so that's good.  However, when you think about it, the plant has been engineered ever since the incas.  I think my dad once told me, or i read in a book, that the husks used to be much smaller in size.  I find that kind of intriguing.

ps The sound clips are really good examples, however i'm not sure I can pinpoint exactly if it's the same texture.

Genesis- The Knife, live at Freetrade hall, hearing this performance was like hearing the song again for the first time, lol.  Man that song was completely histerical, from steve hackett's blistering finger bender hosing down to peter gabriel's insane shout, and, i must say the whistle did come out quite niceley when it didn't peak out the levels on the tape  Cheesy  They just murdered that one!  Even the part  metallica ripped of a couple decades after didn't annoy me as much....

You are right, the version of The Knife on the genesis live album is greater than the Trespass version...

It is so different, I've bought that cd just for that song, its worth it!

Not the same recording.  You are wrong, the tracks from the genesis live record were recorded at De Montfort Hall, Leicester, on the 25th of February, 1973, at least that's what wikipedia says.    Unless De Montfort and Freetrade are the same place.  You know how they have roads that sometimes have two names?  It's a darn good album you're right about that.  It's the first genesis album i myself ever got!  My friend had a bunch of records his parents had given him which he was not listening to... great stuff i also got familiar with Ziggy Stardust through that pile  Cool

Ino i take that one back.  I have the record in my hands right now.  It says:

All recordings made at The De Montfort Hall, Leicester and The Free

Trade Hall, Manchester, February 1973.  Trikipedia fooled me which i find to

be beyond ironic.  I'm really sorry Grin

Richard Barbiere - The Light

Interesting song and one I would definitely like to hear again and possibly more from that album.

Followed by his home band, PT and Buying New Soul.

I always felt that PT was one band that should really be much more popular than they are.

Definitely went through a heavy PT phase.  When I bought Lightbulb Sun, I thought then and I still think now it is a perfect album from cover to cover and possibly their best album to date.

Saw them in concert once and they were very good and then afterwards shooks hands, took photos and got autogrpahs with the band.  What a great night for sure.
