Hello Lumo!

We've just enjoyed some Pretty Things and we've got some Ethos coming up! Ethos--Vintage USA Prog! Amazingly enough, a little bit of good prog has come out of this godforsaken land (like Starcastle).

if the usa did not produce prog maybe it indicates there was no need for it.  when you think about alot of the great performers in the us were probably not so much groups but solo-type artists with a name if you follow me.  when you think of the input from blues, jazz(in all its forms), rock and roll, my pitch on the whole idea is that probably the us would rather listen to prog than make it at that point.  also names like jimi hendrix, zappa, all those musicians displayed prog if not unique elements in them and i'm certainly forgetting artists/groups here.  other names that come to mind are Kansas( a group i wish i knew more) and of course Dream Theater.

Groups like Yes and King Crimson were certainly jazzy at their start to my ears anyway.  To strengthen my earlier point, maybe the british invasion as its called was a cultural response to all the exceptional music made in the us beforehand.  Flower power was american and it certainly affected the prog movement.  History would have it that probably in the late 60 as i see it, europe was flourishing from a societal standpoint while in the us the post 50s era was certainly more about perfecting the prosperity it had achieved through industrialization.  on another note, the oil crisis of 73 certainly seems to have changed the musical landscape, prog included.

That's a very insightful argument, krimhead, that the USA played a vital role in the melange of cultural and musical influences that went into and formed prog, even though most of the great prog groups happened to come from the UK (and lots of great prog from continental Europe of course). I'd like to see a lot more discussion at that level of depth here on SA! Hopefully, a taste of things to come. Thanks krimhead!

Zappa I think it's pretty obvious you add life, humour, and a lot of love to the boards.  Someone has to make sure these boards are running and put to good use.  Keep on rocking in the free world.

Hope you have a nice stay in Switzerland Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy
