I don't understand, are you saying that SA audio output is variable? That sometimes the audio signal is decoded in PCM and other times, other formats? That is really bizzare. I'm not familliar with Linux and how you tune in SA, but I find this very weird!

No, it means that not all my Linux systems use the same audio channel to control the connected speakers. There are way to many audio-control systems on linux :/
I /think/ I use alsa, but otoh, it might be anything else. I also won't be surprised if that changes when I do an upgrade of something.

There is a API that makes you control the audio-settings, you can see all of them with programs like kamix

On most systems the combination of "vol" and "pcm" determine the actual volume you hear from the speakers.

My new mute button sets both to 0 to be sure I don't hear anything.

Ah, but there's an electronica band from the American south by the name of loup-garou! Saw them live in San Francisco a decade back, haven't much to say about it cuz my state of brain at the time!
