Title: Prog Rock Band List Post by boradicus on 9th Aug, 2008 at 12:30am
Hi Everyone !
I was hoping to create a poll for favorite Prog Bands/Artists, but first I need band names to put in the poll ! Please submit a band or a list of bands to be considered. Also please read the previous posts to avoid duplicate bands if you can - it would also be a great help if you continue to NUMBER the list so I can get an idea for how many bands we have! I'll start with the ones I know of (which sad to say aren't that many!): 1. Yes 2. Genesis 3. Rush 4. King Crimson 5. BrandX 6. Gentle Giant 7. Marillion 8. Maha Vishnu Orchestra 9. Emerson Lake & Palmer 10. Focus 11. Glass Hammer 12. Phil Keaggy 13. John MacLaughlin 14. Dream Theatre 15. Galleon 16. Liquid Tension Experiment 17. The Beatles (later stuff) 18. Led Zeppelin 19. Clannad (some stuff like J. Tull) 20. Jethro Tull 21. Starcastle 22. Riverside 23. Ayreon 24. Blackfield 25. Transatlantic 26. Echolyn 27. The Watch 28. Camel 29. The Tangent 30. Kaipa 31. Id Guiness 32. Planet X |

you forgot Pink Floyd!
I think that "prog band" is very general. I think there is a lot of bands you could put on this list. Not to say it is very hard to categorized what is prog and what is not... |

From the playlist here (extracted from my log):
group list ordered by number of songs played Of course Radiohead should not be on it at all, and Earth and Fire should be up, but that are merely my opinions. |

Thanks for the list Tux. Gives me a better insight to the SA library. Q--what time span does this list cover? Thanks, JT :) |

This list is a personal list compiled by Tux, JT. Whilst interesting, it isn't an accurate representation of the S.A. database, I'm afaid. Taking a cursory look, there are a number of artists mentioned that aren't on the S.A. database and there are a number that are on the database and not quoted on the list. |

That is strange. It's obvious that my list is by far complete, but I can't see how entries enter the list that are not played on SA, unless the player has done something weird. The log is created simply by storing the entries that beep-media-player shows in the status while playing the audio-stream. That means that if entries come in the log that are not on SA, the player was playing another stream. That seldom happens, as I have not programmed an alternate stream. I just mute a few groups. BTW, the list was extracted from a log from 2008-02-05 12:11:43 onwards, and it is missing quite a few entries, as I have lost connection many times, and in the beginning, the script was not able to auto-reconnect when the internet was back. |

Don't get me wrong, Tux - your list is an interesting read. Only there are numerous artists mentioned that aren't on the S.A. database ...
Kate Bush Dublin City Ramblers Tommy O'Sullivan Paul Mc Grattan luke kelly O'Connor, Sinead Afro Celt Sound System To name but a few ... Anyway, I read it as more of your personal opinion as to what's being played more than anything else, which makes it a good read. 8-) |

Those must have been from LiveIreland. I can imagine beep burping, as that is one of the other files available.
This list by no means expresses my personal opinion per-se. It is just a log of what passed by. There are, as you know by now, a few bands on this list I would never play. Never. It just happens that what SA plays quite nicely matches most of my taste. As noone will be able to always please averyone, I think I am just happy to have found SA. Don't let the list influence you. BTW I would not object to Kate Bush on the play list </grin> |

Tux, I believe the answer lies in that some selections on your list may have come fron one of my past sessions - of which many tracks are not regularly featured on SA (but may be soon..wink wink ;)) -Hm [smiley=DJ.gif] |

Hah! Good explanation. But how do we poor^Wenriched listeners know the difference? As said, my list just shows what the player reports being pleyed. |
