The reason I like this recording is that, while not technically perfect, Peter's vocal performance is more dramatic - maybe over the top slightly - but clearly he's having fun - Phil's vocal is more up front - and Hackett is truly inspired - You gotta hear this version of Firth of Fifth!  This was an FM broadcast 21 April 1974 - I'll try to get the rest of it to you soon - A crazy version of Battle of Epping Forest ! Plus Peter's little stories between tracks en Francais (!) - Enjoy  8-)

As you might remember I have had a bugger trying to get the station at work - Windows Media seems the only way to go here - I've tried all the proxy settings and nothing seemed to work until today.  I feel kind of dumb that I never tried the dial-up  button on the Startup page. It worked!
Well the sound isn't....well..stellar - but anything is an improvement!

All that to say this - I'm going to have to make up some ground with requests  ;)

You are probably not up at this hour - but if you are - Do you have any Family you could play - or if not, how about The Barbarian by ELP?

If you can't get to it tonight - perhaps in the morning (4:00 - 5:00 in the evening for you)

You may want to try www.jetaudio.com . :-?

They have a free player  ;D which I use at work  ;), quite successfully I might add,  :) behind a firewall  [smiley=bricks.gif], with no tweaking to the standard settings  [smiley=busy_typing.gif].  I connect to the high bandwith stream quickly  [smiley=angel2.gif], with no buffering really at all during my listening time  :), and listen for many hours straight through without any interruption  [smiley=party.gif].  The player is very small, easy user interface, and requires little memory to operate.  Basically, it gets the job done and is not a pig about it at all, and plays basically all audio, and video formats.  

Highly recommended.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

You do a STELLAR job, even without the requests.. but if your bored and looking for something different --  maybe a hour or so "live set" from the 70's                     ( Yes, Genesis, ELP. ELO, Floyd, etc.).  

Something about the live versions that really make each one unique.  8-)

If you wanted to play this between,  oh, I don't know..  let's say now and the next 8 hours we could certainly rock the house as I jam you via the office music system.   Employee productivity has skyrocketed since I found this STELLAR site!   ;)

So I'm currently listenning to this Maneige track that is on (Les Aventures De Saxinette Et Clarophone) and I will admit, it is pretty good.

This past weekend, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the first Montreal Progressive Music Festival (www.fmpm.net) comprised of several local bands, an american band, and the legendary Hatfield and the North (sadly, without drummer Pip, of Gong fame, who passed away recently). The festival was openned by Jérôme Langlois (of Maneige) who, and it pains me to say this, put on one of the worst shows I have ever seen. The compositions were mostly juvenile or derivative (or both) and often self indulgeant. The musicianship was astonishing, don't get me wrong, the man can play the clarinet (and the floutest was AMAZING) but the show was just flat. Not an iota of emotion went into the music, and the music itself wasn't interesting enough to capture my attention without the emotion to back it up. Now I know I sound like a total snob, and I'm probably starting some kind of fire here, but if Mr. Langlois decides to either play in your town, or put out another recording, please lower your expectations or you will be dissapointed. It does not live up to the earlier Maneige recordings.

Also, if my piano teacher ever caught me playing a piano like that, she'd slap my wrists with a ruler.

ok, so enough ranting. Hatfield and the North is INCREDIBLE. OMG!! So Incredible!!!! It was amuzing, though, how the keyboardist would run off the stage after each song that didn't go perfectly, probably to go calm himself down. Just such a tight and unique band. Check 'em out if you don't know 'em.

Having seen both Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett play Montreal (albeit, on separate occasions) I can vouch that they are truly inspired when they play here.

The nearest match to how that sounded for me was a crossover between Camel and The Nits (a Dutch band)

Taking Tiger Mountain (by Strategy), though it's not as ambient sounding as the material you are referring to I believe, is really a chef d'oeuvre of the art rock genre!  It's a must album from Eno ;)

Just goes to show, you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of the people all of the time ... ::)

By all means share your views with regards to what is played here at S.A. I think it's very obvious from your previous posts that you don't like Radiohead but I have no plans to take them off of any given playlist. I'm a fan of theirs and I don't see listeners tuning-out in droves when they are played. In any event, Radiohead make up a very small proportion of the music featured here. There are a lot of other listeners who enjoy a particular Progressive Rock act but not another. Just taking a cursory look through the posts on the forum here will show that (and in doing so, anyone will see that there is more of a debate going on as to whether Brian Eno hits anywhere even close to the 'Prog Target'  ;). Again, a lot of listeners love him and a lot really, really, cannot stand him).

I try and pool together as many diverse groups and artists that I can that fall (albeit, sometimes remotely) under the genre of 'Prog' and this makes the musical 'style' on any given day at S.A. so different and versatile.

I'm going to have to recommend the 'mute' button (or a script), I'm afraid.

Hi Tux,

I think that by now everyone on the forum knows that you dislike Radiohead.
OK, they are not my favourite band either - but this is a radio station and it's made for many listeners with similar but not identical musical taste. I think we should accept that there are others who like different flavours of prog and this station is also made for them.

I think Dee is doing an extraordinarily good job and the program of SA is an extremely fine blend of all sorts of prog. So Dee, please keep on your excellent work.
And here a recommendation to you TUX: when Radiohead is playing why not use the time for other important things like going to the cellear to get the next beer or going for a pee ....
And when you come back the sun will be shining again.  :)

It might sound strange, but in fact it was acompliment.
For me, so far, Radiohead was the only band I dislike (very much). And it's not even for their music, but I just can't stand Thom York's voice. I indeed use the stop button on beep-media-player.
The thing is though, that if the general quality of what you hear is so damn good, the odd one out that one does not like really stands out and annoys more than it should, whils when the station one is (forced to) be listening to only plays medicre and bad stuff, bad things don't stand out.

Just curious. If I decide to indeed start scripting, would you be interested in the results?
Or even willing to cooperate if I heve special requests?

I promise. I won't complain anymore about Radiohead, but please don't overdo it :)

An Open Mind Hears More of the Music

Hey there!

I've got a link to the broadcast on my new Blog, so I'm listening almost all the time while I'm editing away.  This station is fantastic.
I think I even heard a shout out with my name in it...  I was in the other room making lunch, but I'm pretty sure I heard it.  Thrilled!

Anyway, the next time someone's feeling the urge to play a little Floyd (which is a lot, I know!), I've got a hankering for some "Fearless" off of meddle... Granted... if it's from the album cut, or live, or an endless jam track... well... it's all good.

I'm not sure if it's the Floyd, or the Liverpool Kopites that I'm really wanting to hear right now... but that track has both, so it's all good.

Dug out Hakwinds 'PXR5' and was amazed how the track 'Uncle Sam's On Mars' stands the test of time.God bless Robert Calvert (RIP) sadly missed.So any chance of letting other fellow Stellar Attraction people have a listen.
