Out of curiosity -  Is this the Kevin Ayers group with Mike Oldfield on Bass?  I notice that you play him quite a bit.  You might be interested in looking up Downwind by GONG - He is featured on the title track and has quite a nice long solo (in fact the whole piece sounds like it was lifted from one of his CD's) It was recorded in 1978 or 9 - about the time that Pierre Moerlen was playing on Mike's Platinum disc (or was it QE2?) oh well...the rest of the album has guests by Darryl Way & Mick Taylor as well as Steve Winwood on mini-moog(!)
Also have a David Bedford CD w/ Mike on Guitar (the Odyssey)- with a very young Andy Summers on a few tracks also

Some odd trivia for your enjoyment. :D
take care,

More Soft Machine please.
All I've heard so far on the station from Soft Machine is Facelift from Third. :-[
There's a lot more than that.
Maybe some of the later stuff from six, seven. softs etc...

Title: Re: REquests!!
Post by bobthenob on 27th Apr, 2005 at 5:18am
F.Y.I. GG - the Progmaster is on vacation - you'll probably want to make that request again when he returns.  Check out this link:

http://stellar-attraction.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=1114207876

By the way I agree about the Softs! I personally like the John Marshall-Mike Etheridge incarnation myself ;)

Title: Re: REquests!!
Post by GG on 27th Apr, 2005 at 8:25am
I like all of The Soft Machine.
It's just that some of it has it's time and place.
Third, especially Facelift has a very special rare time and place.
At other times it can sound quite discordant and difficult to listen to.
There are several several pieces of music that are like that for me.
At the right time I absolutely love them, at others it's work to even listen to and just grates on my brain.
I am of course speaking for myself.
If anyone loves Third morning, noon, and night then good for them. :)

Title: Re: REquests!!
Post by ProgMaster on 4th May, 2005 at 3:25am
I love all of 'Soft Machine' and there is plenty more of their material due to be added soon. 8)

Personally, I don't have any problems with hitting listeners with some of the more 'adventurous' tracks either by 'Soft Machine' or another artist - 'Can' springs to mind. In any case, they are few and far between on any given playlist ...

Glad you approve of the John Martyn inveryes - a favourite of mine too !! Very hard to classify his music but I do feel that it fits it with the kind of music played here on S.A. That and he supported Yes on tour in the early seventies ... More of him his been added !!

Enjoy.

Yes_Chikki try going for Solid Air.

Classic album with the title track and May You Never ( covered by Clapton ) as the two best known on the album.

Earlier albums are more his "folky" period and later ones are..well...very hard to categorise Mr Martyn.

The first two I heard were Solid Air and One World - never looked back!

Try those two first and if you like them delve deeper...it's wonderful stuff!!

I totally agree. Both CDs make very good starters for ten. I personally prefer his acoustic work, especially when double-bass virtuoso Danny Thompson is involved - truly amazing stuff !! 'Sunday's Child' is another CD I would always recommend and once you're more acquainted with his music (and his very unique 'sound') 'Live at Leeds' is a fantastic CD - plenty of tracks from 'Solid Air' feature.

Of his later releases, 'Grace And Danger' is a goodie. Phil Collins (a long time friend of John Martyn's) plays drums.

Enjoy.

Dee

PS. Inveryes - JM recorded a song about his experience of being on the road with Yes. I can't recall the name but will be sure to track it down ... ;D

Thanks again for a fantastic station.  8)

Just wanted to say "HEY" to you as it has been a while.

If you play some more YES, I'd like to request the "Gates" bonus track on the re-release of Relayer.

The words sound a bit mumbo jumbo, but, the practice is quite cool!!.

Good to see this again!--Way Great!!

There's always a large selection of both Porcupine Tree and ELP on any given day on S.A. 8)

I've heard of Atoll but unfortunately don't have any of their music.

A bit dated (80's fusion), but I like it.

thanks for the shout out. Does Bongwater count as prog? if so do you have any? p.s otter says there has definately been no straying around this weekend and asks if you have anything by soft machine and if they are allowed in the prog temple (we haven't really got to grips with what prog is yet!)

Don't have any Bongwater but do have simply loads of Soft Machine - a fantastic band that are most certainly in the 'Prog Temple'.

P.S. Come on - just a little straying ... ?? ::)

Enjoyed the pretty things just then, was that your request Jane E? maybe you can work out what otter is on about here:

'you may be the loneliest person in the world
you'll never be as lonely as me'

otter has spent many years wondering: 'what exactly does that make me? am I not a person?' - what can I say, otter has a lot of time on her hands  ::)

I second the motion on those requests Brent..esp. the Pat Metheny.  I think out of all the groups I've seen live..I've seen him the most!  It all started back in '79 when a co-worker lent me a cassette of American Garage (I think I gave him a GONG tape-being a Prog-head at the time) The rest is history.  Though not prog per se..I really think he created a new genre (perhaps Prog-Jazz??) and it opened my ears quite a bit.

Thanks-Don

Okay, I hope I don't ruffle any feathers, since I love this station so much, but one of my favorite groups is conspicuously missing, maybe because they're not considered Prog enough...

Supertramp......????

I know they turned into a poppy hit-making machine in '79, but plenty of stuff before that is good Prog... any song from Crime Of The Century, as well as "A Soapbox Opera," "Even In The Quietest Moments," and of course, the grandaddy of them all, "Fool's Overture" (another in my long list of all-time faves).

Your thoughts?

Supertramp are a fine group. However, I don't personally own any of their albums - any suggestions would be welcome.

Incidently, most (if not all) of the Silver Sessions have featured tracks by Supertramp.

You play The Who and Led Zep.  Are they Prog?  Hmmmm?

If you're unsure of Queen, forget every time you've heard "Bohemian," "Under Pressure," and "Another One Bites the Dust," and listen to some of their other songs.

And I don't think The Pretty Things are Prog either.  So there.

The Who, whilst not being out-and-out 'Prog' throughout their career, do have some impressive Prog credentials. They wrote several Rock Operas which are most definitely very 'Proggy' - tracks from these are featured on S.A. along with material from their Psychedelic classic 'Sell Out'.

Led Zeppelin have a 'bad boy' image and are overtly blues-based in their style of playing - like The Who. Both of these attributes can alienate them from the world of Prog, however, I still feel their earlier material warrants playing here.

As far as Queen go, 'Fat Bottomed Girls (You Make The Loving World Go Around)' has to be an all time favourite of mine ... ;)

Pretty Things, apart from writing the first ever Rock Opera (don't let anyone tell you otherwise - they're wrong, full stop) their output up until around 1972 was most definitely very 'Proggy'. 'Parachute' being the prime example, as whilst not being a 'Rock Opera' per se., is a damn fine concept album. That and they were signed to EMI's Harvest label and several of their albums were produced by Norman Smith - of Pink Floyd production fame. He even co-wrote on a couple of tracks too.

Deep Purple do feature on S.A. from time-to-time. Mostly in the form of tracks from the re-mastered (and re-released) 'Fireball' album. I also have a number of tracks from the excellent 'Harvest Festival' CD box-set on the database and I used to have a copy of 'Burn' on vinyl years ago ...

Anyway, consider Deep Purple added to the (extensive !) 'CDs-to-buy' list.

Hey Prog Master, how are you?

I hope this note finds you well.

It has been a while and glad to be back.

How about some Oz Noy if you have it.  Seems like a nice follow-up to the Ozric tune.

Cheers!

Dear D and other DJs;

In light of the passing of Arthur Lee of Love fame, who we spoke of recently on this forum, I would like to request an album or two be played in their entirety in his memory.

Thank you.

More sad news ... :'(

Absolutely Steven, a dedication mini-session will be played soon.

D

D;

Thanks for being there to give respect to the great music of Arthur Lee and Love by playing some of their fine tunes.

Arthur may have passed away, but his music will live on forever and hopefully more and more will continue to discover the joy and pleasure of Love.

Yes, I have a request.

It is a french quebec group that i want to introduce. It is called Grimskunk. It is progressive depending on witch song you listen...You should probably listen to some before adding it to the play list. Well, it is just an idea. For more info on witch CD to get, or witch song to get, just ask me.

Man is it ever great to be here.  What would really be cool would be to hear something of Steve Hacket's Voyage of the Acolyte album.  Yes/no!?

Have you ever heard of the French-Canadian group Maneige ? I often play them here on S.A. - very jazzy. 8-)

No I don't, ill do some investigating of my own!

For grimskunk, I recommend some older stuff... YOu will ear, it is kinda little bit to hard for this station, but, at least, you will listen to a all new group!

If you go on there web site, there is some samples. I recommend Mahmoud's Dream.

http://www.grimskunk.com/

Good stuff, but, like I said, a little bit harder than the stuff im use to ear on this station...

As much as I would love to run S.A. full-time Max, it is a hobby that has spiralled out of control ... ;)

hello :)

I would really like to hear some Rush, if possible i'd like to hear "Countdown".  If not i'd really like to hear some Peter Gabriel with screaming bass lines (Tony Levin) from one of the 2 first albums.  Have a great day.

BTW playlist IMO = amazing!

Yes, the first question you ask me, it is if I knew Maneige. I said yes. It was true. I've ask my parent's, since then, and I asked them if they ever saw then on concert. Yes they did see them in concert. They said that the musicians would exchange instruments between each song.

I have found this, it gives you an idea of the meaning of the word manège...
http://forum.wordreference.com/archive/index.php?t-87496.html

Keep this in mind that that the sound "Neige" and "Nège" is the same sound in french!

Neat information no?
