As already mentioned, it looks like the next session will be Yes again. Surely there are other bands with enough material to be considered. After all this will be the 3rd Yes session. I love Yes, but variety is the spice of life as they say.

How about Pink Floyd, King Crimson or Jethro Tull. I of course, could easily fill 24hrs with Marillion music.

As an alternative to one band, how about a theme (as mention in the mellotron thread). Focus on new music released since 2000 for example. The '21st Century Session'. This would still include bands like Yes and King Crimson who are still going strong but also feature newer bands like Mars Volta, Pocupine Tree, IQ, Spocks Beard, Pineapple Thief, Radiohead, Dream Theatre, Riverside et al. Thus illustrating what a healthy scene Progressive Rock still is.

Any other ideas?

Just briefly, there are a few reasons why I chose 'Yes' for the next 'session' (again) :-

• I know that there are several 'new acquaintances' to the station that are 'Yes' fans and have missed the previous 'sessions'. They have recently e-mailed requesting 'Yes'.
  
  
• The 'Genesis' marathon proved a bigger success than expected. Even with the extra bandwidth on the main 96 Kbps server, full capacity was hit on several occasions during the 'session'. I wanted to strike while the iron was still hot, so scheduled the obvious choice of 'Yes'. This is due (in part) to ...
  
  
• 'Yes' are my favourite band and I simply have a huge amount of their material on file. It's a relatively easy task for me to compile a 'marathon' of their music. I hope that it's apparent there is more than a modicum of thought injected into any given playlist on SA ::). Especially so for a 'marathon' session. For me personally, I could compile a 'Yes' 'session playlist' blind-folded. Well, maybe not blind-folded but I'm sure you get the idea.

Silver, this is a fantastic suggestion  ;D - one that I would like to 'brew' for a couple of weeks. If anything, to let people chip-in what they feel should be played and (just as importantly !) to let me purchase any CDs that might be needed to accommodate it.

I'm not nearly as in touch with the more recent bands, though I find that I'm usually just as likely to enjoy such a song as I am to be disappointed (from past experience).  I have some bands

I think an ELP marathon would be great, though I'm not sure if there would be enough material for it (maybe there is - who knows!).

Dee thank you so much for 'A Passion Play' - haven't heard that in ...oh....30 years(!)   It was always my least favorite tull album back then.  I remember hearing it for the first time trying very hard to like it (I thoroughly enjoyed Thick as a Brick, but was taken aback at another Full length piece following it)  As I remember, the press was equally unimpressed (hence the track "Only Solitare" on the War Child album - which was Ian Anderson's answer to the critics).  
Sounds so different now with newer (older) ears.  Yet I remember the parts I enjoyed - great guitar by martin & the addition of sopranino sax by Ian.  I remember the synth parts as sounding cheap & uninspired as if thrown in just to get a synth on the album rather than for the piece's benefit. (a theory of mine that although synthesizers were becoming more popular - some groups were more succesful in using them in an organic way e.g. Genesis or Gentle Giant)  Anyway, I remember thinking that Tull was kind of straining to find a comfortable way of integrating the synth into their sound - I really don't think they ever did.
Ahh...Mother Goose is starting...now thats more like it!

Very, very interesting ideas ... I've heard (some) reports that these 'Marathons' should consist of more 'rare' recordings ...  ::)

Personally, I'm 'all Sessioned-out' out the moment but I am paying close attention to the ideas - keep them coming !!  ;D

It light of recent developments, 'Roger Waters' is up for 24 hour treatment soon. ;D

'Camel' has been a popular request and once a few more CDs of theirs arrive, that will be on the cards.

Have a few more ideas floating around at the moment too ... 8)

I definitely think this deserves another chance. I think it needs to include as many older bands that have newer material (Yes, King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, Marillion) as possible to balance out the newer bands that may have put people off last time. Maybe ensure that we don't go say more than an hour without a Yes track being played for example. Is it only Magnification that would qualify?

This is what I said in a previous post regarding this:

It's all about getting a good balance between old school prog and the different directions that newer bands are taking progressive music in.

Yup, this is on the cards for another airing. Apart from anything else, the last time this session was played, there were CDs still arriving on the day ... ::)

A few other bands that have been 'voted' for will also get the 'session treatment'. Perhaps not in the form of 24 hours but certainly a good run ... 8)

In the meantime, keep the ideas coming and watch this space !!

I'm certain that the 'Fish' fish head refers to is the former Marillion lead singer and solo artist. The suggestion coming from the recent successful 24 hour Marillion session held here on S.A. by Silver.

Have to agree that a Tull session would be good, however, I think a Camel session would also be good as someone else suggested.

I can only think of groups pre-1970 using a sitar. It was used by the Pretty Things on the classic 'S.F.Sorrow' album and The Moody Blues used it on a couple of albums released around the same time. Steve Howe uses what sounds like a sitar on both 'To Be Over' (from 'Relayer') and on a couple of tracks from his 'Beginnings' album. However, I forget the name of the instrument used but it isn't a sitar ...

Dee - I was just going to correct myself - there's a track on the Cluster/Eno disc with Sitar called - One.  But there aren't many more I could think of (apart from the Beatles or Stones).  There is an instrumental group from the Netherlands called Flairk that use the Sitar - not exactly Prog, but very close - all other groups I know would fall into the jazz rhelm (Oregon, Shankar, Jan Garbarek).
Love the sound of it (in small doses!) though! ;)

Wow...I just remembered I Know What I Like from Selling England By the Pound  by Genesis. Very prominent Sitar (played by Mike Rutherford I believe)  :)

Hmmm ... I know it sounds like a sitar but I'm not entirely convinced it is a sitar being played on 'I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)'. I have a funny feeling it's the same instrument that Steve Howe uses from time to time (a 'guitar harp' ??). I'll investigate and come back to everyone on this. ::)
