Is the Grateful Dead Prog-Rock?
23rd Sep, 2010 at 4:17pm

Yesterday I heard The Dead on SA. I thought my player migrated to GDRadio! Imagine my surprise when the line read Stellar Attraction. Great music. But, what gives? Did I miss a class at Prog-Rock U.? Enlighten me. And don't use the argument that the Dead's really a Jazz-Rock fusion band. I knew that back in the 70's.  Cheesy Shocked Wink Roll Eyes Tongue  Smiley Smiley

I, too, must have missed that class at Prog-Rock U, which I would think also have included Led Zeppelin, which I've heard here on SA. What else do you think was in that class that we missed? Elton John, perhaps?

Questions such as these are often asked from time to time.

Please see this other thread as an example.

It's obviously very difficult to pigeon-hole groups and artists into specific genres, of which Progressive Rock is one. As for the specifics mentioned here, the 'Dead are very much a psychedelic group above anything else. As such, whilst they aren't considered 'strictly' Prog, they most certainly do orbit (albeit at quite some distance ...) around the 'Sun of Prog'. And it's because of this that they are occasionally featured here on S.A. And I do stress occasionally. Prog Trivia - they were mooted to tour with Yes a few years ago.

Likewise as far as the wonderful Led Zeppelin are concerned - there is most definitely some overlap in their music, which consists of more than their use of the Mellotron. Wink

Lastly, as for Elton John, he was seriously considered as the front man for King Crimson during the recording of their 1970 'The Wake Of Poseidon' album. Seriously.

This interesting topic will no doubt continue to re-surface again.

Very interesting info about Elton John and King Crimson, D. I don't think there is any EJ being played on SA right now, but there is a potential implication in your statement about him that there is and I've just never heard it. Is there?

Yes, I believe I read that about EJ in Sid Smith's King Crimson book. Shocked

Don't worry mate, apart from the two early Elton John tracks that Rick Wakeman played on (and are featured on his 'Piano Vibrations' album), I definitely don't have any plans to start featuring the music of Elton John.
