Playlist
6th Feb, 2005 at 6:05am

Hi progmaster.  Still listening, and delighted to hear some Gentle Giant (Way Of Life) on the station.

Quick question: do you have a playlist for visitors to peruse?

And how are you doing with Eddie Jobson/Zinc?  Could I make this part of a "vinyl night", for I do have it in said format?

Hey bogl !!

Good to hear you're still tuning-in. I've added a huge amount of GG recently - keep on the look-out for more of their material which is on the playlist.

I'm working on some php code that will automatically display the playlist on the website. I'm getting there, please bear with me on this one as I know it has been requested several times - but I am on the case ...

In the meantime, if your chosen media player doesn't display the name and artist of the track being played automatically, is to check-out the front page of the site as this now has a live, 'what's playing now', section on it.

Updates will follow on this as soon as possible.

Cheers for now.

Dee

Thanks for that, progmaster.  The prospect of faffing with php code fills me with horror, so all the best to you in trying.

As a Linux user, I dug around in xmms's settings and worked out how to display current track playing, so no problem there.  I'm just intrigued as to what *is* on the database, that's all.

Keep up the good work,

bogl

Hi there fatrhino

Not a Linux user myself so I can't give you any advice as to the settings within xmms - I assume you can actually tune-in though ?

For the playlist answer JT, you can only see what will play next and what is the last 5 song played on the SA main page (http://www.stellar-attraction.com/)

A list of the entire playlist avaible for us to summon dosen't exist to my knowledge. The closer there is, it's when Darran put on a list of the new album/artist recently added to SA. This situation is different when we have the chance to listen to a session of one of the DJ. At that time, the DJ can put a list of the bands/songs/artists at his own discretion (incomplete or complete).

For the request, you can post a message in the request section of the forum (here). The next time Progmaster is online, he will gadly queue your asked songs (that is if you are still online).

Personnaly, I wait until ProgMaster is online and send him a personnal message for my request. I don't know if this method is preferable for ProgMaster, so I would advise you to put your request on the forum and wait for an answer from ProgMaster. He will surely answer my question when he is back (I miss him).

Hope this helps!

Max

Ps: I know that I'm not the admin, but considering the fact that PM is absent for the time being, I've taken initiative to answer your questions.

Why do I love statistics so much? Because it is so easy to do with perl?

Maybe my play-log is not the most reliable source, but it shows nice figures:

Top 20 groups:

1200 Pink Floyd
1197 Yes
826 Genesis
714 King Crimson
559 Marillion
472 Jethro Tull
367 Rick Wakeman
365 Mike Oldfield
363 Porcupine Tree
341 Gentle Giant
323 Dream Theater
304 Emerson, Lake And Palmer
283 Roger Waters
277 Steve Hackett
274 Peter Gabriel
271 Can
258 Rush
257 Camel
232 Caravan
231 Fish

Top 20 songs:

42 King Crimson - One More Red Nightmare
36 Yes - Turn Of The Century
34 Dervish LI - Dervish LI AD2604 (liveIreland,  Indepe
33 Emerson, Lake And Palmer - The Hut of Baba Yaga
33 The Mars Volta - Concertina
 31 Velofax - Cent Mille
31 Starcastle - Lady Of The Lake
29 Dream Theater - Finally Free
 29 Dark - Maypole
29 Metaphor - In The Cave
27 Dust - Love Me Hard
26 Wigwam - Cafffkaff, The Country Psychologist
25 Arena - The Hour Glass
25 Mew - Behind The Drapes
25 Anthony Phillips - Wise After The Event
 25 Babe Ruth - Joker
25 The Watch - Sound Of Sirens
 25 Magma - Maahnt
 25 Unicorn - Ain't Got A Lot Of Future
25 Moth Conspiracy - Turkish Delight

The numbers in front are just a count in the playlog since 2008-02-05

BTW SysAdmin, the font "Lucida Console" (or Liberation Mono" would be a welcome addition. I'd love to show this list in a monospaced font, but for me Courier is unacceptable: too ugly.

I think there is a little trick you could do Tux:

Code:
With this command [code] [/ code]

I don't know if this is what your asking for... Could you explain what is a monospaced font?

BTW thanks for the stats, very neat and interesting!

THANKS  JT   Cool

No problem with you resurrecting this thread JT.

An often asked question and one which I would consider as two-fold :-

  • If you already know the name of a song that you'd like to hear and would like it played, simply PM me (obviously, I'd have to be online at the time of the request !!) and I'll happily oblige and mention the requester's name (usually their forum username) before playing the track. Also, if there is an artist / album / track that you haven't heard here on S.A. before and think that it would make a good addition to the programming, simply start a thread with the Listener's Requests board and I will investigate.
  • The second element of 'how to make a request' is whether this is available as an interactive, automated method. At the time of writing, it isn't I'm afraid, however, it has been tentatively penned in for 'Phase Four' - the next set of upgrades to the website, forum and other elements of the 'S.A. experience'. However, as I'm still ironing-out the glitches in 'Phase 3(b)' (and have yet to provide a full update as to what has been enhanced ... Undecided) - work on this next phase is unlikely to start until the beginning of next year.
Put simply, I plan to have a fully interactive element of the website whereby a listener can peruse the entire S.A. music library online, select a track and have it queued automatically and played at a specific time, with the requester's name mentioned on the front page of the website. Again, work on this won't start until early next year and believe me when I say that it will involve a lot of work to achieve ... !! Undecided

I hope that this answers the question, JT but feel free to post again if you'd like further information.

That or drop me a line if you'd like to hear a specific track played. Wink Cool

Thank you. Indeed, not exactly a priority.

FYI "Liberation Mono" has been designed to be a cross platform Free font with the same metrics as Arial and Courier to make exchanging documents in a somewhat portable layout possible. See here for more details. Downloads are available for True-Type and Linux.
No font is perfect, but for me this one showed that making documents look the same on windows and Linux (or Word and OpenOffice) actually is possible.

As mentioned, it's a very big task but have no fear, there will be a lot of song-weighting / rotating logic behind it to avoid such problems. Cool

I hope, Darran, that some provision will be made so that the track won't que if it's been played in the last couple of hours...perhaps the requester could be asked by the system to pick another track?

Thx

As mentioned, it's a very big task but have no fear, there will be a lot of song-weighting / rotating logic behind it to avoid such problems. Cool

Awesome! Excellent!

I can't believe you've got me all psyched up about a *font*!   Cool

Tux is terribly sorry about that Tongue

Just wanted to be informative.

In the end it is just like with music: all about taste. Why do you think XP and Vista are so polular amongst the younsters? They get skins, and moving backgrounds! All useless rubbish that just eats away their CPU power, but hey, just give them what they want Smiley

Why do people buy a news-paper? Because the way the paper brings the news matches what they like to read and how to read it. Same reason why I do NOT have a newspaper. Here there is no newspaper that I would read without being annoyed by the font or layout.

For music however, we are very lucky to have a huge choice (unless you are walking in a shop, where they play stuff that isn't worth calling music, but that aside). We, the listeners of SA have chosen to listen to this station because we likelove the music that is being broadcasted. And sometimes, and some very often, we take the atime to mention our appreciation in this forum !

If there is a shortage of time, please put it in the music and forget all about the fonts and layout. We'll listen anyway.

They're a duo that records early Genesis type music. You could call them a clone but I have other Genesis-like band cd's and Unifaun has more originality with their work.

Imo the cd is sort of a "lost" Genesis album. It's that good.

Would make a great addition to SA imo.
