Title: "Fresh Prog" Programme # 1
Post by MickK on 7th Jun, 2010 at 9:34am
Fresh Prog # 1, Wednesday 9th June 2010, 8.00pm - Midnight (British Summer Time)

Hello and welcome to Show # 1 of SA's new four hour programme which highlights newly released and contemporary progressive and prog related albums and is tentatively entitled “Fresh Prog“. At present the show will only be on air every two months (roughly) but if things go well and it is well received it could feasibly be a monthly show of three hours.

The show will be repeated several times for different time zones over the following week and Darran will be confirming the times shortly.

The show will be put together by myself Mick, I was brought up musically with Yes and Genesis etc. in the seventies but I now like to incorporate new releases into my listening and when I suggested to Darran (ProgMaster) that there may be a niche on Stellar Attraction for a show that has new material as its platform, he was very enthusiastic and has given loads of help and encouragement.

The format will be that we showcase six albums that have been released in recent months on each show. There will be between 35 and 40 minutes played from each album and the tracks will be mixed up in a random mp3 player style. If you add that up that still leaves about 20 minutes left over and I intend to use this to have “intro” and “outro” tracks and possibly one in the middle of the show which will be from recent releases of the past few years.

OK now you have the basic idea for the show, please give me plenty of feedback (negative or positive), tell me if you don’t like the format. If you would really like a new released CD to be featured, let me know well in advance and I’ll give it some thought and see what I can do.

The six featured albums for Show # 1 are:
* “Artificial” by Unitopia
* “Mars Hollow” by Mars Hollow
* “MMX” by Mindgames
* “In The Wake Of Evolution” by Kaipa
* “Planet Earth” by The Watch
* “The Gathering Light” by Karnataka

The intro and outro tracks are by American band IZZ and French proggers Nemo from their fine 2009 albums "The Darkened Room" and "Barbares".

Three of the bands, Unitopia, The Watch and Kaipa are well known to SA listeners, I would say, while the other three are a bit more of an unknown quantity.

Mars Hollow: The band heralds from Southern California's San Fernando Valley and comprises four veteran musicians - John Baker (vocals/guitar), Jerry Beller (drums/vocals), Kerry Chicoine (bass/vocals) and Steve Mauk (keyboards/vocals). This is their debut album, released on the 10T label  and has been very well received, see here http://www.seaoftranquility.org/reviews.php?op=showcontent&id=9140 to see a five star review, so you can see it’s a goody !!!!

Karnataka: A prog band with Celtic and Folk influences from south Wales, they formed in the 90s and have had many line up changes with founder member Ian Jones the one constant factor. The Gathering Light  is their fourth studio album and has been subject to good reviews, see one here http://www.getreadytorock.com/reviews2010/karnataka2.htm Unfortunately the band fragmented yet again at the end of May 2010 with Lisa Fury (vocals), Ian Harris (drums) and Gonzalo Carrera (keyboards) leaving. Ian Jones and guitarist Enrico Pinna are the remaining members and are recruiting new band members.

Mindgames: Are a five piece Symphonic prog band from Belgium who formed originally in 1997, MMX is their third album in eight years. See here to see a review http://www.dprp.net/reviews/201008.php

So we have bands from Australia, USA, UK, Belgium, Sweden, Italy and France for show #1. Quite a nice international mix.

The complete playlist for the show is on the next post, as I'm running out of remaining characters. So please go there !!! thanks !

Hey Mickk,

Great Idea.  Some Unsettled by Dean Watson (me!) just got uploaded to the site and I was wondering if you could include it sometime?  It is prog, and certainly fresh!  Let me know if you need more info!

Great stuff, Mick! This was a truly "progressive" set imho, using the definition of that word that I know, being 50 years old and having listened to lots of Yes/Genesis/Pink Floyd beginning decades ago. I especially enjoyed:

Karnataka - Tide to Fall; The Serpent and the Sea; Forsaken
Uplifting, good guitar, cool lyrics and vocals.

Unitopia - What Kind of World?
Simply classic progressive, in its feel, musical variety (in this one song), vocals and lyrics

Mars Hollow - In Your Hands
Again, classic progressive -- very nice

Again, thanks!

Hey Mick, I'm really liking this song called "Please help in the costs of running SA -- click on the Paypal..."

Er... um... well that's what it says on Winamp. Maybe it's Unitopia - Gone in the Blink of an Eye instead?

:)

Super set. I've got 3 of the albums (Kaipa, Watch and Karnataka)  and have just purchased Mindgames (all 3 of their albums). Can't say I liked Mars Hollow and I didn't hear enough of IZZ to make up my mind.

Cheers

Alan

Thanks for the positive feedback everybody. Programme # 2 will be on air Wednesday 21st July 2010 and be repeated over the following week. It will feature tracks from the new albums by Mystery, Spock's Beard, Odyssice, The Pineapple Thief, Wolfspring and Karfagen, as well as single tracks by Big Big Train, Satellite and Leap Day. More details including a full play list nearer the time.

Until then I say "Cheers". :D

Many, many thanks for putting this together, Mick. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

An excellent playlist and judging by the listening figures, a very, very popular first outing.

Here's looking to many more sessions. [smiley=DJ.gif]

Cheers.
